Up Yonder
This series explores the intricate relationship between humans and nature, conveyed through faux window cutouts embellished with masks, vines, and other simulated elements. The title "Up Yonder" originates from an old saying that speaks to finding peace and carries an angelic connotation. This installation delves into the concept of our habitual observation of nature from the inside of our confines, emphasizing the shifting dynamics as nature now envelops us. The incorporation of masks offers a contemporary context, alluding to the human impact on the environment. Through this piece, I intend to prompt contemplation on the evolving connection between humanity and the natural world, transforming the conventional view of nature as something observed through windows into a powerful statement about the symbiotic relationship where humans and nature merge.
Poem:
From the other side
I was invited to dance with the outside.
I descended into the deep atmosphere,
The hues of your palette can't be matched with a brush.
They try to mimic your essence on canvas, but I'd rather experience your aura in person.
What does it mean when we find ourselves captured by nature?
I used to witness your beauty from the compact window from the inside.
Now, we are bonded with a mutual union.
Recharged by your skies and protected by the deepest shades.
The roots of this place have seen generations.
I touch the ground, and I immediately connect with the ancestors.
This dance will forever entwine us for lifetimes.
Our hearts and laughter echo in the wind until faint, and then silence seeps in.
What a time to be alive. There was music pumping,
grooves busting and laughter flowing. “Groovy nights”
focuses on my grandmother’s younger years specifically
her 20’s. She moved to Overtown in Miami in the early
sixties and started her family lineage from then on. Her
early 20’s were the highlights because before she became
Nana and mama, she was Etherline, a woman full of life and style.
